MY PANCH KEDAR STORY
A Journey That Started With Faith
From challenging treks and sleepless nights to breathtaking sunrises and divine blessings, I completed the sacred Panch Kedar Yatra in 9 unforgettable days.
This series is a glimpse of every day, every trail, and every moment that made this journey special.
This journey took me through all five Kedars of Uttarakhand — Rudranath, Kalpeshwar, Madhyamaheshwar, Tungnath and Kedarnath.
Some journeys are planned. Others are destined.
THE YATRA
Five Temples. One Calling.
Panch Kedar is not a single summit. It is a circuit of faith, endurance and mountain weather — five shrines of Lord Shiva scattered across the Garhwal Himalayas, reached on foot, by shared taxis, and through nights that ask more of you than the map ever will.
THE SACRED FIVE
Five Kedars. Five Stories.
Each shrine has its own trail, its own weather and its own quiet after the climb.
Kedarnath
The final sacred destination and the emotional climax of the journey.
Madhyamaheshwar
A peaceful Himalayan shrine beneath the mighty Chaukhamba peaks.
Tungnath
A breathtaking high-altitude trail through the meadows above Chopta.
Rudranath
A remote forest pilgrimage where wilderness, endurance and devotion meet.
Kalpeshwar
The sacred cave temple where Lord Shiva’s Jata is worshipped.

Day 01
The Journey Begins
Rishikesh → Devprayag → Rudraprayag → Gopeshwar → Sagar
Before the first light touched the Himalayas, I boarded a bus from Rishikesh with one purpose—to begin my Panch Kedar Yatra by witnessing the sacred Rudranath Doli Yatra and the temple’s opening ceremony.
A route woven with holy rivers, towering mountains, and countless bends. With every passing mile, the noise of the city faded, replaced by the silence of the Himalayas and the call of Mahadev.
By evening, I reached Sagar, the base camp for Rudranath. The destination was still far away, but the pilgrimage had already begun.
The destination was still far away, but the pilgrimage had already begun.
Day 02
Into the Wild
Sagar → Pung Bugyal → Lyuti Bugyal → Panar Bugyal → Pitradhar → Rudranath
25 KM TREK · 14 HOURS · START 5:00 AM · RUDRANATH 7:00 PM
At 5:00 AM, we stepped into the wilderness with a single goal—to reach Rudranath before nightfall. A demanding 25 km trek through dense forests, endless bugyals, and rugged Himalayan trails awaited us.
Some journeys are planned, while others are destined. Along the trail, I met two strangers—Saksham and Shivam. What began as a chance encounter quickly turned into a brotherhood on the mountains.
With very limited stay options ahead, we made one decision: we would complete the entire trek in a single day, no matter how challenging it became.
Every ascent tested our endurance, every meadow rewarded us with breathtaking views, and every step reminded us that the toughest paths often lead to the most sacred places.
After nearly 14 hours of trekking, we reached Rudranath Temple at around 7:00 PM.
Exhausted, yet filled with gratitude, we stood before Mahadev—realizing that the journey had already transformed us long before we reached the destination.
Day 03
The Blessing of Rudranath
Rudranath → Saraswati Kund → Sagar
The morning welcomed us with a breathtaking Himalayan sunrise. As the first rays illuminated the sacred valley, we explored the divine Rudranath Temple and the serene Saraswati Kund, soaking in the peace that only the mountains can offer.
Soon, the valley came alive with chants of “Har Har Mahadev!” as the sacred Rudranath Doli Yatra, temple opening ceremony, and ancient rituals unfolded before our eyes.
Witnessing this rare moment was the very reason I had planned this journey, and every step of the trek suddenly felt worthwhile.
After receiving Mahadev’s blessings, we began our descent to Sagar at 12:00 PM.
What looked easier on paper became another test of endurance.
Every passing hour felt longer than the last—our legs gave up, our energy faded, but our determination never did.
As daylight disappeared and darkness once again surrounded the mountains, we finally reached Sagar at 9:30 PM.
The greatest reward of this pilgrimage wasn’t just reaching the temple—it was finding strength we never knew we had.
Day 04
From One Kedar to the Next
Sagar → Gopeshwar → Helang → Kalpeshwar → Helang → Chamoli → Karnaprayag → Rudraprayag → Ransi
With Rudranath behind me, it was time to continue the Panch Kedar journey.
The day was filled with changing shared taxis, winding mountain roads, and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes as I made my way to Kalpeshwar, where Lord Shiva’s Jata is worshipped.
After seeking Mahadev’s blessings at Kalpeshwar, the journey continued through Helang, Chamoli, Karnaprayag, and Rudraprayag, before finally reaching Ransi.
Along the way, I met Gaurav, and before we knew it, we had decided to continue the Panch Kedar Yatra together towards Madhyamaheshwar.
A new friend for the next chapter — Gaurav.
Day 05
Walking With the Doli of Mahadev
Ransi → Gaundhar → Khadara
Before sunrise, we left Ransi and began our trek towards Madhyamaheshwar.
The trail passed through beautiful Himalayan villages, lush forests, and the soothing sound of rivers—every step bringing us closer to Mahadev.
But this wasn’t just another trekking day.
It was the day of the Madhyamaheshwar Doli Yatra.
By sheer grace, I had the opportunity to walk alongside the sacred Doli, surrounded by the chants of “Har Har Mahadev!”, traditional music, and countless devotees.
It wasn’t just a procession—it was a celebration of faith, devotion, and centuries-old traditions.
Since the temple remained closed until the Doli arrived, there was no rush to reach the shrine.
Instead, we embraced the journey itself.
As the sun disappeared behind the mountains, we reached Khadara Village, where we stayed for the night.
Some of the most beautiful memories are made with people you had never met before.
Day 06
Closer to Mahadev
Khadara → Nanu → Madhyamaheshwar
With the first light of dawn, we left Khadara and continued our journey towards Madhyamaheshwar.
The trail led us through peaceful Himalayan villages, dense forests, wooden bridges, and breathtaking mountain landscapes, where every step felt like a prayer.
As the valley opened up, the majestic Madhyamaheshwar Temple finally came into view.
After days of travel and trekking, reaching this sacred shrine felt surreal.
As evening approached, we hiked to Budha Madhyamaheshwar.
Standing there, watching the golden sunset paint the mighty Chaukhamba peaks, was one of the most unforgettable moments of the entire Panch Kedar Yatra.
Day 07
From the Valley of Mahadev to the Meadows of Chopta
Madhyamaheshwar → Nanu → Khadara → Ransi → Chopta
The day began before sunrise with the peaceful darshan of Madhyamaheshwar.
In the quiet morning, surrounded by the mighty Himalayas, I offered my prayers to Mahadev before beginning another long descent.
Step by step, we made our way back to Ransi, carrying unforgettable memories and tired legs.
But the journey was far from over—another Kedar was calling.
Without wasting time, I continued towards Chopta, the gateway to Tungnath.
By evening, I finally reached Chopta.
Next stop Tungnath
Day 08
The Final Call of Mahadev Begins
Chopta → Tungnath → Chopta → Kund → Gaurikund
4 KEDARS COMPLETED · 1 KEDAR REMAINING
This was the toughest chapter of my Panch Kedar Yatra.
With my office waiting back home, I had very little time—but one dream remained unfinished: to complete all five Kedars.
Before sunrise, I climbed to Tungnath, received Mahadev’s blessings, and descended back to Chopta.
Without taking a proper break, I continued through Kund to Gaurikund, where the final and most demanding journey began.
Day 09
Kedarnath
Gaurikund → Kedarnath → Gaurikund → Delhi
5 KM BEFORE KEDARNATH · 3 HOURS REST · FINAL ASCENT 4:00 AM · ARRIVAL KEDARNATH
As night fell, exhaustion caught up with me.
About 5 km before Kedarnath, my body refused to move any further.
My eyes were closing, my legs had no strength left, and for the first time during the entire yatra, I had to stop.
I rested there for nearly three hours, wrapped in the cold Himalayan night.
At around 4:00 AM, I woke up, gathered every bit of strength I had left, and started walking again.
With the first rays of sunlight touching the snow-covered peaks, I finally stood before Kedarnath.
In that moment, every blister, every sleepless night, every kilometer, and every challenge faded away.
Mahadev had called... and I had finally arrived.
After exploring the sacred temple and offering my final prayers, I began the descent to Gaurikund. From there, a journey of shared taxis and buses eventually brought me back to Delhi.
Mahadev had called... and I had finally arrived.

PANCH KEDAR PRACTICAL GUIDE
Planning Your Panch Kedar Yatra?
01 Best Time
Temple opening season in late spring through early autumn is when this circuit is usually walked. Mountain weather still changes quickly, so leave room in the plan.
02 Trek Difficulty
This is a demanding multi-day yatra, not a weekend walk. Long distances, altitude, and consecutive days of travel matter more than any single climb.
03 Accommodation
Expect simple village stays, shared rooms, and basic meals near the shrines. Book what you can, and keep a buffer for weather delays.
04 Transportation
Shared taxis and buses connect the valleys. Trails connect the temples. The journey is a mix of both, often on the same day.
05 What To Pack
Travel light but prepared: layers, rain protection, a torch, basic first aid, and shoes that have already been walked in.
06 Fitness Preparation
Train for long days, not just steep ones. Consecutive hours on your feet matter more than a single hard session in the gym.
